If the system needs to perform multiple, distinctly different functions at different times (multi-capability), and/or needs to evolve in its form/function over time (evolution), and/or needs to remain functional, despite a few failures or changing external conditions (survivability), then reconfigurability is often required. For Planetary Surface Vehicles (PSV) that will be involved in future manned space exploration missions, all of these cases are applicable and are particularly relevant:
